MESSEJANA OF ALJUSTREL , PORTUGAL - PRESENTATION

 

The village of Messejana is very ancient origin , ignoring those who founded it . However owes its name to the Arabs , which was conquered in 1235 by the Knights of the Order of Santiago de Espada , having been attached to the term Aljustrel . Received from D. Dinis the category of municipality , which would be confirmed by the New Foral , given by D. Manuel I, on July 1, 1512 . Messejana became the headquarters of the vast district of Campo d' Ourique . The county was dissolved on 24 October 1855 , and its 7 parishes divided among four neighboring municipalities . The Parish of Messejana then joined the County of Aljustrel . Messejana came to be eleven churches . Nowadays , there are still the Mother Church , Church of Mercy Chapel of Our Lady of the Assumption and the Hermitage of the Holy Kings and recent Aldeia dos Elvas chapel . Can still be observed in the parish , the ruins of the Medieval Castle , the Clock Tower , the Fontanário Alonso Gomes , Cruzeiro Independence , some manors , the Ethnographic Museum and Public Library and the ruins of the Franciscan Convent of Our Lady of Mercy . On the other hand , the history of the Chapel of Our Lady of the Assumption or Chapel of Our Lady of Between - the - Vineyards , located under Messejana , is linked to the visitation of the friars of the Order of Santiago , which administered between 1534 and 1755. one of the oldest and Messejana is rooted traditions of bullfighting .
